The farm at Down East Gallery is located at 146 Boothbay Road (Route 27), only one-half mile south of the intersection with Route 1.

The first thing you notice when you approach the farm is “big sky”. Perched on top of a ridgeline in Edgecomb Maine, our 1904 farmhouse and 1906 post and beam barn face southeasterly toward the 35-acre former dairy farm with distant views of hills and marshland.

The Barn

When you drive into the gallery property, the big white barn with blue doors is directly in front of the driveway entrance. To the left is a classic white farmhouse, which is an art gallery open daily from 11 am to 4 pm throughout the summer season.  The gallery extends outside, with sculptures in the garden and art work in the barn. During rental events, the sculptures are removed from the barn while art work on the walls will remain.

The barn is 30’ wide by 40’ long and is a 1906 original post and beam structure.  In the back, immediately opposite of the front entry, is a new 25’ wide by 16’ deep back barn which is elevated to stage height (2’ above the barn floor) with 10’ wide stairs and opening connecting the two barn spaces.  This back barn has stage lighting appropriate for a band or other performance.  The back barn has large windows looking out over the view.

The barn also has a sliding barn door on the southwest that leads to the side yard. The original milkhouse is located here, which has been renovated into a changing room or other multi-purpose space.

The Property

With the 100 foot elevation change across the property, the original farmers worked the land into terraces. Sitting just below and between the farmhouse and the barn is a flat terrace that runs the width of the property. This terrace can be dotted with casual or formal outdoor seating for your guests to relax, dine or simply soak in the sun and views.

Down the slope below this first terrace is Down East Gallery’s vineyard and sunflower field. The young vineyard is within its first 5 years of planting and will soon yield blends of Marquette red wine and blueberries, as well as a Itasca white wine with farm apples.

The sunflower field offers plenty of photographic opportunities for weddings planned during the annual bloom in late August and September.

Sunflowers above and below.jpg

In addition to the sunflowers, Down East Gallery has a large cut flower garden located to the northeast of the farmhouse. Guests can walk through and enjoy the flowers, monarchs and chirping crickets. Flower arrangements can also be purchased for your event.

Beyond the cut flower garden, a mowed path through a field leads to a farm road that criss-crosses down the hill to the lower fields. Once there, the farms’s original red tractor sits in a small field surrounded by woods. This field can be used for parking during outdoor weddings in the lower field. From here, a mowed path leads to the main field which is over 12 acres in size and bordered by woods and marshland.

Weddings
